On May 18, 2019 early morning storms with high winds and tornadoes hit San Angelo and surrounding areas resulting in widespread damage of an estimated 100 homes. On Saturday, local county and city officials declared the devastating damage a disaster and within a few hours, many volunteers and organizations such as the American Red Cross, United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) as well as Texas Baptist Men Committed were in neighborhoods helping to provide immediate emergency needs to the residents of the Bradford area including the establishment of a temporary shelter at the First United Methodist Church. Other organizations such as the Salvation Army and local churches also provided a helping hand to support those impacted by the disaster.
San Angelo Disaster Relief Fund:
The San Angelo Area Foundation established the San Angelo Disaster Relief Fund to accept monetary donations allowing neighbors from across the community to help support the extended recovery assistance needed for these residents. The Foundation worked closely with local responder organizations to provide assistance in the extended recovery effort to help those residents most impacted by the tornado, including our neighbors in Ballinger and Dove Creek, which were also hit by this storm.
